Emilio Rojo 2023

Emilio Rojo 2023 reflects one of the great vineyards of inland Galicia. Treixadura, Godello, Lado, Albariño, Caíño Blanco, Torrontés, and Loureira grow side by side on the various terraces of the Emilio Rojo plot. Through the personalized work of the vine tender, who understands the uniqueness of each vine, the vineyard achieves a special balance between soil, climate, and grape varieties. The nutrient-rich topsoil, intermingled with the local sábrego, contrasts with deep roots that reach down to the bedrock. Granitic intensity, minerality, and a long finish. A reflection of a unique vineyard.

The winter was rainy, with a large amount of precipitation falling from October 2022 through June 2023. Budbreak occurred early, and this, combined with the high rainfall, required special care in the management of each vineyard plot. The summer was cool, and extreme heat did not arrive until late August. Both in the vineyard and in the winery, all the grapes were selected cluster by cluster to ensure the exact point of ripeness and the highest quality during winemaking. The harvest took place over several days: August 24 and 31, and throughout the day on September 6.

Emilio Rojo’s 1.2-hectare plot is located on the east-facing slope of the Avia Valley. The various terraces grow on soil that combines organic matter with the sandy texture of “sábrego.” Protected by a forest of oak and chestnut trees both at the top and bottom of the slope, the co-planted white grape varieties grow side by side throughout the entire growing cycle. The precision with which the optimal ripeness is determined vine by vine on this plot is extreme, with up to three separate harvests carried out in the 2023 vintage. The grapes are harvested into 12-kg boxes. The clusters are sorted again upon arrival at the winery and pressed without destemming. Fermentation for each harvest was carried out with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, where the wine was also aged for 12 months. For added protection, the wine contains sulfites. It was bottled in December 2024 and aged for an additional 24 months in the bottle before being released to the market.
