O Gran Meín Tinto 2021

O Gran Meín Tinto 2022 reflects the greatness of the red wines of the Avia Valley. The vineyards of Osebe and Ribeira, in the north of Leiro, face east, as the eastern exposure is known locally. The predominant sandstone is mixed with schist in Ribeira, while sand prevails in Osebe. Caíño longo and brancellao reflect the historical past of the region’s red wines: a marked oceanic character combined with the ripeness typical of the interior. The finesse of the Atlantic influence. The elegance and aging potential of the historic wines of Ribeiro. Direct, bright, and persistent.

The year 2022 will be remembered in Spain, and particularly in Ribeiro, for the heat waves and drought that occurred throughout the summer. The winter was quite dry, but normal in terms of temperatures. At the end of February, the trend changed: March and April were wet and cold. This delayed budding, but meant extra work in terms of controlling plant cover during several days with a risk of frost. May was atypical, with temperatures above 35ºC (95ºF) and no rain. In the summer, especially in July and the first days of August, temperatures were extremely high, exceeding 40ºC (104ºF) for several consecutive days. Despite the extreme conditions, the vineyard adapted its physiological development to a dry and warm year such as the one experienced. The red varieties were harvested between September 20 and September 26, depending on the ripeness of each plot.

O Gran Meín Red 2022 reflects two plots: Osebe and Ribeira. The sábrego soil, present throughout the Avia valley, is interspersed to the north of Leiro, with schist in Ribeira and very fine sand in Osebe. The caíño longo and bracellao grape varieties reach their maximum expression thanks to a particular climate: with a strong Atlantic influence during most of the year, summers are marked by temperature fluctuations in the interior. Viticulture, inherited from centuries of tradition, seeks to take advantage of a unique elegance and aging potential.

O Gran Meín Red 2022 is made with Brancellao and Caíño Longo grapes from the northernmost part of Leiro. The grapes are harvested in 12kg boxes and taken to the winery to be processed and aged separately in stainless steel tanks of different capacities and 1200-liter foudres. After aging for approximately ten months, this wine was bottled in the summer of 2023 and is kept in the bottle for another 30 months before being released on the market. For added protection, the wine contains sulfites
